AT A GLANCE

A concept that combines a short preference survey, similar-film discovery and a personal watchlist to help viewers move from browsing to choosing.

The challenge

Having subscriptions does not make choosing easy.

Viewers can spend their available time comparing movies, ratings, reviews and trailers instead of watching something. Cinebuff explores how discovery could start with a person’s immediate preferences and the streaming subscriptions they already have.

The published case study reports interviews with 15 users and 94 survey responses. Themes included too many choices, shared profiles weakening personalization, switching between sites and wanting recommendations from trusted people.

01 · Define

Design around the moment of choosing.

I focused on frequent viewers and mapped two situations: discovering something during a short break to save for later, and choosing something to watch now. The experience needs to support both rather than assume every visit leads immediately to a film.

Research, segmentation, persona and journey artifacts informed the information architecture and flows. The proposed watchlist becomes the bridge between casual discovery and an intentional choice.

02 · Design

Start with a few useful preferences.

A short survey asks whether someone wants a movie or series, their current genre preference and similar movies they enjoy. Results can then be narrowed to their subscriptions. “Found the twin” explores finding films similar to a favorite.

Movie details bring ratings and trailers closer to the decision. A watchlist supports saving and organizing discoveries, while community features let people follow others with similar tastes.

Outcome & reflection

A hypothesis made tangible.

The project includes research artifacts, wireframes, high-fidelity screens and a Figma prototype. It is a discovery concept, not a streaming service or an implemented recommendation engine.

Recommendation accuracy and reduced decision time have not been measured. The next useful test would be whether viewers can choose a film more confidently using this flow than their usual browsing process.

NEXT PROJECT

Wright

A screenwriting concept that makes submission opportunities and pitch progress easier to understand.
